6/7 Last Day of School

On the last day of school, we did our final exam, graded and reviewed all the questions.  Each student was awarded an end-of-year certificate afterwards, for their excellent job done this year! For those who were absent today but would like to receive this certificate, please contact me individually and arrange a pick-up later.

It is amazing to see how much the students have changed/grown throughout the whole year! I really enjoyed our weekly meetings and wish to continue working with you next year. But we have to say goodbye and move on to a new school year! It's both sad and exiting. Luckily, we have such a great, supportive community, from families to school administrators and teachers.  I am sure all of you will be in good hands next year no matter which class you move into. I wish you all bright future and achieving big in your endeavors!

5/10 - 5/31 Class Review and News for the Last Class

We were able to finish the textbook lessons by May 3 and left the past three lessons for review. During our review sessions, we did the following:

1) Working together, we went through the exercise pages of our textbook 1 - 74.

 

2) Played games such as "Character Math," "Beat the Teacher," "Character Bingo," etc. 

 

 

3) Two little friends did their Show-and-Tell and Q&A. 

 

 

4) Wrote messages on Mother's Day and discussed what we like to do with Mommies. 

 

 

5) Read stories, such as  《抱抱我的妈妈》、《Yes和No》。

 

6 ) We reviewed all the songs we learned and worked on a handout sheet that has all the Chinese characters we've practiced writing this year. 

7) We also learned a new poem: 唐诗《画》

Wow, that was a lot of accomplishment in merely six 45-minute classes! 

We are going to have a final exam on 6/7, the last day of school. The students don't have to prepare for the exam. But if the students are willing, they may finish the exercises in our textbook, page 75 and forward at home prior to Sunday. In the class, we may spend more time reviewing the exam questions than actually taking the exam. It is just a way to collect some feedback information regarding how the students have progressed so far (and what are the remaining problems), rather than a formal assessment. So please don't stress the students out by emphasizing on this particular task when talking about this upcoming last-day-of-school. 

Last but not the least, have fun at the school party that will occur right after the after-school classes! It has been such a rewarding school year for me, teaching this wonderful group of kids at the Chinese School! I wish you all a fun-filled yet relaxing summer and keep up with your great work in learning Chinese!!!

Show-and-Tell Reminder / Please Bring a Toy

Dear Class,

We have finished some show-and-tell activities along the way. But if you haven't done it yet, please bring a toy or special item (good to show to the whole class and talk about it) to the class today. It's okay if we have multiple students to share in one class. Today would be the class chance for us to do this given there's only one more class left for the school year and we'll save that class for finals/reviews.

5/3 Class Review

After learning how to write today's characters, we played a new game: "Beat the teacher." In this game, the students work as a team to "beat" me by following the right stocks when I'm writing a character on the board, but not following (pause and stay quiet) me when I "purposefully" make a mistake.  The students loved this game and had a lot of fun in the class! Since the stroke order has been such a challenge to almost all the students, this game really helped us paying attention to the right order of strokes of each character, in a super fun way. We shall play it again in our review sessions in the following few weeks. 

After all the games and writing practice, we also had another little booklet done, titled "小猫种鱼." It was also the story of lesson 24, the last lesson in our textbook. More than one students asked me: "Do we have more classes next week if this is the last lesson?" The answer is absolutely Yes! We'll have four more "regular" classes, all in May, followed by our last gathering, the school end-of-year party.  

We'll be reviewing the characters we've learned so far and the Pinyin system in this month. On the last one or two Sundays, we'll probably have a little quiz to assess the students' levels. Keep up your hard work and don't just relax yet. ;-) 

Lastly, a friendly reminder here to Guang'ren and Guang'mei: Please each bring a toy from home tomorrow (5/10) to show-and-tell in our class.

4/26 Class Review

Today's show-and-tell brought us Peter and his new toy. The toy was so new that it even has no name yet. ; ) So besides asking him all the "regular" questions, the whole class worked together trying to name his toy, both in English and in Chinese. Although I can't recall all those interesting names, I was really impressed by how creative they were! 

Beyond learning our routine Chinese characters and discussing the topic from our textbook, one more thing worth mentioning today was our submission of the Yearbook Competition. Take a look at the picture below. Everyone did their best and worked hard on this project. I'm so proud of you, all the students in c1a class! Your love stories are original and amazing! Our deepest appreciation also goes to all the parents, grandparents, our lovely families who have nurtured the warmest love in our hearts!   

4/19 Class Review

In today's class, we had two students show-and-tell, all in Chinese, and other students asked questions regarding the toys they brought in. it was fun to listen to them and see how sophisticated sometimes their questions could go. 

Today's lesson was about toys. We made a small booklet titled "各种各样的玩具". It would be great if you could spend some time at home during the next few weeks, reading this booklet repeatedly until they can memorize/recognize all the characters in it. 

Family Year Book Competition Highlights

Dear C1a Class Parents,

Please read last week's School Newsletter carefully (Vol.15, No.32, April 5-11) since there were some important upcoming events described in details. If you couldn't find it in your email in-box, please kindly let me know so that I can forward it to you asap.

I'd like to remind you some key points related to the Year Book competition here in this post:

1) The deadline of submission is April 26th, which is only two weeks away from now. 

2) This year's theme is "Love". Please inspire your child(ren) to present his or her own "love" story by drawing picture(s) and writing simple sentences, all hand-written in Chinese. Please leave their names on the back.

3) We gave each student a piece of white paper on Sunday already. Please use that paper only, or similar quality and size to it, if for some reason you couldn't use it.

4)For each class, 3-4 awards will be granted, depending on class size, and judged by a special committee. All posters will be exhibited in the old gym between 2:15 to 4:30 pm on May 3rd.

4/12 Class Review

 

Above pictures were taken during the dictation quiz. Now, after learning so many characters, we can easily put them into simple sentences! So, instead of dictating characters, words, and phrases, like what we did in the past, I dictated four complete sentences. And they were like this:  小山羊吃草，不吃肉。马和牛也吃草。我有西瓜，她有鱼。我爱妈妈和爸爸。I wish the kids can feel this excitement too, of being able to write whole sentences all in Chinese! 

The new characters we learned today were: 欢、乐、听、音。We spent about 5 minutes in class practicing writing these new characters after learning their Pin Yin, stocks, words, etc.

The textbook topic for today's lesson was hobbies “爱好”. We played two games related with hobby vocabulary. From the pictures below, you can definitely feel how fun those games were. The students really had a good time today!  In one of the games, the students draw their own hobbies on a small piece of card. They all drew really well!
